  1.  This document reports the proceedings of a conference on early
  2. childhood and family research sponsored by the Administration on
  3. Children, Youth and Families (ACYF). Presentations at the conference
  4. consisted of reports of research, literature reviews, descriptions of
  5. projects funded by ACYF, and commentaries on research and practice in
  6. Head Start. The conference consisted of several special sessions, 25
  7. panel discussions, 16 roundtables, and 11 symposia. The panels
  8. addressed topics that included: (1) children's health; (2) the
  9. theories of Vygotsky and Feuerstein; (3) developmental screening; (4)
  10. homelessness; (5) school readiness; (6) foster care; (7)
  11. mainstreaming; (8) Head Start evaluations; (9) poverty; (10) parent
  12. involvement; (11) adolescent parenting; (12) child care; (13) peer
  13. conflict; (14) child abuse; (15) emergent literacy; (16) minority
  14. families; and (17) at-risk children. Topics considered by the
  15. roundtables included school transition, policy formation, national
  16. evaluations, staff training, children with special needs, minority
  17. children, and programs that simultaneously address the problems of two
  18. generations. The symposia considered topics that included mathematical
  19. cognition; infants with low birth weight; HIV-infected mothers; and
  20. maternal characteristics. A directory of presenters is appended.
